Kent House Longlisted for Archello Awards 2024

Kent House by Studio CMA – contemporary rural home longlisted for Archello Awards 2024

We’re delighted to share that Kent House has been longlisted in the Archello Awards 2024 in the category ‘House of the Year (Rural) — Small.’

The Archello Awards celebrate projects from around the world that combine design innovation, craft, and environmental responsibility. For us, being recognised among such a diverse and inspiring group of studios is a real honour — and a reflection of our ongoing commitment to creating homes that feel both grounded and forward-looking.

A modern home rooted in its surroundings

Set within a conservation area and surrounded by listed buildings in a small village in Kent, the site for Kent House is long and narrow, bounded by roads at either end. The challenge was to create a contemporary home that respected the heritage context while offering a modern, low-energy way of living.

Currently occupied by a small cottage and outbuilding, the proposal reorganises the site to bring vehicles through the original entrance off the main road, improving both access and privacy. The new house draws inspiration from the local vernacular — Kent peg tiles, reclaimed red brick and timber — but reinterprets them in a crisp, modern form. It’s a 21st-century take on traditional craftsmanship, using familiar materials in a way that feels fresh yet timeless.

Designed for performance and comfort

As with all Studio CMA projects, energy efficiency and occupant comfort guided every design decision. A highly insulated envelope, airtight detailing, and passive solar design reduce heat loss and make the house economical to run. Natural materials, generous daylight and views through the site create a healthy, calming interior — a home that feels at ease in its setting.

Recognition from Archello

Archello’s awards are judged by an international panel of architects, designers and writers who highlight projects that respond intelligently to their environment and community. Being part of the 2024 longlist is not only a recognition of the project’s design quality but also a validation of the collaborative effort behind it — from our clients and consultants to local craftspeople.

You can view the full longlist on Archello’s Awards page and see our project feature here on Archello.

We’re grateful to our clients, collaborators, and everyone who contributed to bringing this vision to life.
